Cumberland County supports community navigator position

The Municipality of the County of Cumberland is entering into a memorandum of understanding with the Town of Amherst to fund the creation of a community navigator who will act as the primary touch point between the community, local physicians, allied health professionals and businesses to engage, support and encourage physician integration and retention in the Cumberland region.

The navigator will be an employee of the Town of Amherst and be funded jointly by the town and the county.

The cost is $50,000 per year for two years.

The navigator will be a member of the Cumberland Physician Recruitment Committee, the Cumberland Physician Retention and Appreciation Committee and the Cumberland Health Professionals Recruitment and Retention Committee.

The successful candidate will promote Amherst and Cumberland County as a great place to work, live and play; identify and attend recruitment events and support NS Health Authority recruiters by facilitating local tours for interested medical professionals; organize and create promotional material and community/facility profiles for the area; coordinate activities that will complement existing recruitment and settlement programs and maintain a continual positive social presence concerning physician recruitment.

The navigator will establish and maintain connections with local physicians and reach out to health-care professionals in the region to discuss their needs, gaps and challenges; arrange and attend events for residents, medical students and newcomers; create opportunities for health-care professionals to connect with other families/people of similar interests; participate in physician recognition events and survey physicians annually.

The navigator will also facilitate the smooth transition of the provider and their families to the community; participate in networking initiatives and establish community connections that build and maintain relationships with government, businesses and community stakeholders to aid in achieving the goals of the recruitment and retention program.
