Amherst & Area Chamber of Commerce "Getting to Know You"
Overview of the project:
The Amherst & Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting “Getting to Know You” online public sessions for the candidates of the October 17th Municipal Elections. Because of the overlap in coverage areas, and to avoid the confusion of who is included and who isn’t, we’ve decided to include all three Municipal units: Amherst, Oxford and the County of Cumberland.
To simplify the timing and get ahead of the October 5th date for advance polls, the online public sessions of the candidates for Mayor will be held during the evening of October 1st. Candidates for council for Amherst and for Cumberland County will be held online during the afternoon and early evening of October 4th. Council positions for Oxford have been filled by acclimation so no session is currently scheduled.
The format is separate Zoom meetings for each municipal unit and category of candidates. Each Zoom session will consist of only the moderator and the candidates on the call. The sessions themselves will be livestreamed to the public on the Amherst & Area Chamber of Commerce Facebook page. Following the events the recordings will be left on the Facebook page for those unable to watch during the live event.
Currently the planned schedule is:
Thursday October 1st
6:00 pm to 7:00 pm – Oxford / Candidates for Mayor
7:00 pm to 8:00 pm – Amherst / Candidates for Mayor
8:00 pm to 9:00 pm – Municipality of Cumberland / Candidates for Mayor (postponed due to Parrsboro and District Board of Trade candidate event at the same time)
Sunday October 4th
2:00 pm to 4:00 pm – Amherst / Candidates for Council
4:00 pm to 6:00 pm – Cumberland / Candidates for Council / Districts 1 – 7 (please note District 8 will be covered by the Parrsboro and District Board of Trade separately)
Each session agenda will be three components:
1. Candidates will each have five minutes to share their message. Speaking order will be determined by lottery.
2. Questions provided by the public to before 12 noon September 27th will be asked of the candidates. Specific candidates to ask can be identified in the questions, but note unfair or loaded questions will not be considered. The deadline is because questions selected for this section will be shared with the candidates ahead of time.
3. Questions provided by the public to after 12 noon September 27th or during the event will be asked of the candidates. Specific candidates to ask can be identified in the questions, but note unfair or loaded questions will not be considered.
