Cumberland REMO is urging residents across the county to continue to prepare for the arrival of hurricane Lee this weekend.

Lee is expected to be just below hurricane strength by the time it reaches the coast of Maine or the Maritimes on late Saturday or early Sunday, but given the anticipated large size of the storm, conditions will begin to deteriorate prior to the storm centre’s arrival.Lee Friday

While much of Nova Scotia is expected to experience the effects of the Lee, not all areas will experience severe conditions. However, residents need to be prepared for the worst.

“The Cumberland Regional Emergency Management team and its partner agencies are closely monitoring hurricane Lee as it makes its way towards us. We are working hard to support the efforts of first responders and community members who will be on the front lines to deal with the storm,” Municipality of Cumberland chief administrative officer Greg Herrett said.

“In the past, storms of this nature have caused power outages, coastal and inland flooding and transportation issues. We urge all residents to monitor the weather forecast for their area, prepare their properties by storing loose items and prepare for the possibility of power outages by having enough supplies on hand for 72 hours. Monitor our social media accounts for updates. Decisions on opening comfort centres will be made on a community-by-community basis.”

Residents are urged to continuing monitoring media and social media for updates on the storm conditions and the situation as it evolves.

They are also being asked to be prepared in the event of emergency and this includes having a 72-hour kit on hand as well as preparing a bag should they need to leave their home suddenly.
