The Municipality of Cumberland and members of CUPE Local 919 have signed a new four-year collective agreement.
Mayor Murray Scott and CUPE Local 919 president Mike Gerrior joined chief administrative officer Greg Herrett and union vice-president Mandy Hunter in signing the agreement on Thursday, May 2, 2024.
The union represents 23 Public Works employees in Springhill and maintenance staff at the Dr. Carson & Marion Murray Community Centre.
The most recently collective agreement expired Oct. 31, 2023. The new agreement is effective Nov. 1, 2023, and expires March 31, 2027.
“I’m really happy that the union and the municipality have come to an agreement on this new contract,” Mayor Scott said following the signing. “Our Public Works Department employees and maintenance staff at the community centre do a great job in our community. They deserve a good contract.”
“We worked at the contract and we hope everyone is satisfied,” the union local president. “We’re very happy with the progress of the negotiations. Everything went very well and everyone worked together to come to a contract that’s good for our members and for the municipality.”
The CAO said he was very pleased with the contract.
“I’m very pleased with how the negotiations went. We think it’s a fair deal for both sides,” Herrett said. “There’s a little bit in it for everyone with fair compensation for our workers and some language clarification for the municipality. I really appreciate the environment in which we negotiated the agreement.”
