The Municipality of Cumberland is developing a Community Energy and Emissions Plan and it’s looking for public input via a survey.
The municipality has been working towards building a strong more climate resilient community. This means reducing energy consumption and GHG emissions, while adjusting plans for climate change and the associated impacts.
It has been investing in green energy infrastructure, developing efficient processes, and making conscious decisions that benefit the community, the economy, and the environment.
The municipality is a part of the Partners for Climate Protection program through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives Canada.
“The overall goal of the program is to reduce our contribution to climate change. This will be accomplished by creating an inventory of current greenhouse gas emissions from the municipality (including residential, commercial, and institutional emissions), by setting targets for reducing those emissions, and by developing achievable strategies to meet those targets,” said Steve Ferguson, the municipality’s senior advisor, climate change and special projects.
The purpose of the survey is to gauge public support for the municipality taking various initiatives related to climate change.
This will assist in decision-making about allocating resources to those initiatives.
The Municipality of Cumberland is gathering public input via a survey to help with the development of a Community Energy and Emissions Plan.
“Collecting information about the types and amounts of energy used and calculating the amount of greenhouse gas emitted is well underway,” the municipality’s director of development and planning Glen Boone said.
“Analyzing the data collected, consulting with the public, developing future scenarios, and developing targets for future emissions will take place over the next couple of months.”
By participating in this survey, participants will help the municipality learn the importance residents place on taking action to reduce energy consumption and GHG emissions, the degree to which residents support the municipality and its partners in taking action on these issues and residents’ willingness to take action to reduce individual energy consumption and GHG emissions.
A CEEP will create a roadmap for the municipality and community to further address climate change through greenhouse gas emissions reductions. The plan will include corporate and community GHG emission reduction targets for the years 2030 and 2050, provision of strategies for meeting the proposed GHG targets and the development of monitoring frameworks to track progress.
The municipality is working with the consulting firm, Stantec, to assemble its plan. Stantec is currently working with municipal officials to complete a baseline report on the existing inventories of GHG emissions, forecast future GHG emissions, and identify potential energy and GHG reduction measures.
The plan is scheduled to be completed later this fall.
A CEEP will create a roadmap for the municipality and community to further address climate change through greenhouse gas emissions reductions.
