The Municipality of Cumberland is paying tribute to a former councillor who passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2023.

William “Bill” Wayne Baker was 78. Baker was elected to municipal council in 2012 in the former District 7, representing the Wentworth, Westchester area, and served until 2016.

“I’ve known Bill for many years as a friend and he was someone who always cared about his community,” Municipality of Cumberland Mayor Murray Scott said. “He was great as a councillor and always very supportive of his community and Cumberland County.

“We are indebted to Bill for everything he did on council and the work he did in his district.”

Baker was born in Shinimicas in 1943 and worked at many jobs over the years. He had a passion for harness racing, training and racing many horses over the years. He was an active member of the Wentworth Fire Department for more than 35 years and was a longtime volunteer with the Wentworth Recreation Centre.

He also served on the board of directors for the Community Credit Union and was a longtime member of the Cumberland Singers.

He liked bowling, hunting and fishing, golf, snowmobiling and playing 45’s.

Arrangements have been entrusted to MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home and Crematorium, Visiting hours are Sunday, May 21, from 2-5 p.m. at MacDiarmid’s Funeral Home and Crematorium.

A celebration of life is scheduled for Monday, May 22 at the Wentworth Recreation Centre from 2-5 p.m. with a service of remembrance beginning at 2.In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to a charity of choice.
