The Municipality of Cumberland is urging residents to be fire smart and safe as they head outdoors during the holiday weekend and beyond.

“We all remember the horrific wildfires that ravaged the province last spring.  We are now back into wildfire season. Many wildfires occur because of human activities, deliberate or otherwise,” Municipality of Cumberland director of Protective Services Allen Cole said. “We should all be extremely cautious this time of year when the forests and fields are drying out and the leaves are not yet in full bloom. These conditions are especially dangerous for both starting and escalating fires.”

From March 15 to Oct. 15, the Province of Nova Scotia has daily burn restrictions in place to help prevent wildfires (https://novascotia.ca/burnsafe/). The BurnSafe map is updated daily.

The province has just announced that the fine for violating the daily burn restrictions has been increased to more than $25,000 per occurrence for this wildfire season.
