The Municipality of Cumberland, in partnership with the Town of Truro is preparing a proposal to the Province of Nova Scotia’s Community Solar Program, which was launched by the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables in February 2024.
As part of the application process, essential preliminary work is currently underway, including a geotechnical assessment, an initial environmental assessment, draft engineering and design, and a Nova Scotia Power grid inter-connection study.
There will be an Open House event on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the CIBC Room at the Dr. Carson & Marion Murray Community Centre, Springhill, to provide additional information and collect community feedback. Persons interested in attending the Open House are requested to send an email to
A map showing the location of the proposed Springhill Solar Project. This is the indicative design, subject to Geotech and wetland investigation and other site considerations.
This solar project is a collaborative effort between the Municipality of Cumberland and the Town of Truro. AREA (the Alternative Energy Resource Authority) has been retained to prepare the application and provide overall planning and project management services.
The project aims to provide renewable energy to Nova Scotians.
If the project is approved by the Province of Nova Scotia, the Municipality of Cumberland and the Town of Truro will collectively own the solar project and sell energy to Nova Scotia Power Inc. (NSPI).
The site indicated in the illustration above, off the Lagoon Road in the community of Springhill, has been selected as it is a post-industrial site (former mine lands) with few mature trees and the land is owned by the Municipality. It also has reasonable access to the electrical grid.
A seven-megawatt solar project is proposed. A project of this size would produce enough green energy to power the equivalent of more than 1,000 average homes.
The Springhill Solar Project’s objectives include the development of a project that provides potential environmental and economic benefits, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support Nova Scotia’s climate actions and renewable energy objectives.
