The Amherst and Area Chamber of Commerce and Municipality of Cumberland County Mayor Murray Scott are working to improve the lines of communication between government and the business community.
Scott was the speaker Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023, at the first in a series of breakfast events between chamber members and leaders from all levels of government.
Cumberland County celebrates African Heritage Month

The African Nova Scotian contribution to Cumberland County was celebrated on Monday, Feb. 6, during a ceremony and poster unveiling recognizing African Heritage Month at the Cumberland African Nova Scotian Association’s office in downtown Amherst.
While much has been accomplished, Murray Scott, mayor of the Municipality of Cumberland, said there is still much to do.
Pugwash's new library to open Monday, Feb. 6

For several months Denise Corey has watched the new library in Pugwash has taken shape, knowing years of planning will come to fruition in a new modern facility to replace an older building that no longer met the needs of the community.
That wait is set to end on Monday when the $2.198-million library will open its doors to the public.
Municipality of Cumberland honours more than 30 employees

The Municipality of Cumberland honoured more than 30 long-time employees for their years of service to the municipality and the community during an employee appreciation dinner at the Dr. Carson & Marion Murray Community Centre in Springhill on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023.
“Every organization, it doesn’t matter if it’s small or big business or the Municipality of Cumberland with approximately 100 employees, is absolutely dependent on its employees,” Municipality of Cumberland County Mayor Murray Scott said. “They are the face of our organization; they do the work every day on behalf of the organization and the citizens.“I can’t say enough how appreciative we are of the great work these people do and we’re so fortunate they chose to work and live in Cumberland County and it’s something I heard all the time from our residents.”

Cumberland municipal council has approved the second reading of an application to amend the land-use bylaws to change a property near Wentworth from rural resource to recreational residential to permit the construction of a subdivision of recreational cottage lots on the Valley Road.
The subject property is approximately five kilometres west of Wentworth.
The subdivision will be built on a newly built private road on the adjacent property.
